On August 5, 2026, the SEC announced the establishment of a new Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit within the Division of Enforcement. According to the SEC’s press release, the specialized unit will “provide dedicated expertise, focus, and capacity to pursue accounting and financial reporting fraud cases, as well as general misconduct in accounting and auditing areas” and will work with staff across all relevant divisions and offices. Division of Enforcement Director David Woodcock noted that the new unit will be critical to the Division’s pursuit of financial reporting fraud and accounting and auditor misconduct and expands on the Division’s efforts to “crack down on bad actors.” The unit will be led by Timothy Zimmerman, who joined the Division in May as a senior advisor to the Director, and will be staffed by both attorneys and accountants with relevant experience and skills related to financial reporting, accounting and auditing.
